So, the Romans nailed Jesus to thecrossandwaited until He wasdead. (they thought that was the end of the trouble maker) Thentheyhandedthebody over to Joseph, a richman from Arimathea. Joseph wrappedthebody in a longsheetandplacedit in his personaltomb which wascarved out of a largerock. Hethenrolled a greatstone across theentrance.
The Bible says on thenextday, (the Sabbath), theleadingpriestsand Pharisees went to see Pilate. Theytold him, “Sir, werememberwhatthatdeceiveroncesaidwhilehewasstillalive: ‘After three days I will rise from thedead.’ Sowe are requestingthatyou seal thetomb until thethirdday. This will prevent his disciples from comingandstealing his bodyandthentell everyone hewasraised from thedead! Pilate replied, “Take guardsandsecureitthebestyou can.” Sothey sealed thetomband posted guards to protectit.
But something spectacular would happened on Sunday morning. The Bible says, early on Sunday morning, as a newdaywasdawning, Mary Magdalene andtheother Mary wentout to visitthetomb.
O death, where is your victory? O death, where is your sting?
For sin is the sting that results in death, and the law gives sin its power. But thank God! He gives us victory over sin and death through our Lord Jesus Christ.
Suddenly there was a greatearthquakeand an angelcamedown from heaven, rolledthestoneaside, andsat on it. Theguardsshook with fearwhentheysaw him, andtheyfell into a deadfaint.
Thentheangelspoke to thewomen. “Don’t be afraid!” hesaid. “I knowyou are lookingfor Jesus, whowascrucified. He is not here!He is risen from thedead, just as He said would happen. Come, seewhere his bodywaslying. Andnow, goquicklyandtell his disciplesthathe has risen from thedead, and He is goingahead of you to Galilee. You will see him there. Rememberwhat I havetoldyou.”
Thewomenran from thetomb quickly. They were frightenedbutalsofilled with greatjoy. Theyrushed to givethedisciplestheangel’s message. And as theywent, Jesus met them andgreeted them. Andtheyran to Him, grasped His feet, andworshiped Him. Then Jesus said to them, “Don’t be afraid! Gotell my brothers to leavefor Galilee, andthey will see me there.”
On thefirstday of the Festival of Unleavened Bread, thedisciplescame to Jesus andasked, “Where doyouwant us to preparethe Passover mealforyou?”
“As yougo into thecity,” hetold them, “you will see a certainman. Tell him, ‘The Teacher says: My time has come, and I will eatthe Passover meal with my disciples at your house.’” So thedisciplesdid as Jesus told them andpreparedthe Passover mealthere.
When itwasevening, Jesus satdown at thetable with the twelve disciples. While theywereeating, hesaid, “I tellyouthetruth, one of you will betray me.”
Greatly distressed, each one asked in turn, “Am I theone, Lord?”
He replied, “One of youwho has justeaten from thisbowl with me will betray me. For the Son of Man must die, as the Scriptures declaredlongago. Buthowterribleit will be fortheonewhobetrays him. It would be farbetterforthatmanifhehadneverbeenborn!”
Judas, theonewho would betray him, alsoasked, “Rabbi, am I theone?”
And Jesus told him, “You havesaidit.”
As theywereeating, Jesus tooksomebreadandblessedit. Thenhebrokeit in piecesandgaveit to thedisciples, saying, “Take thisandeatit, forthis is my body.”
And hetook a cup of wine andgavethanks to God forit. Hegaveit to them andsaid, “Each of youdrink from it, forthis is my blood, which confirmsthecovenant between God and his people. It is poured out as a sacrifice to forgivethesins of many. Mark, my words-I, will not drink wine again until theday I drinkitnew with you in my Father’s Kingdom.”
Then theysang a hymnandwentout to the Mount of Olives.
In Luke 9:23 Jesus gives us a preview of what it means to follow Him. “… If any man will come after me, let him deny himself, and pick up his cross daily and follow me”.
Although taking up your cross involves denying self, the main focus is about following Christ. The cross or burden we carry has to do with the choices we make with our will, the responses we have in our actions, and the attitude we carry in our hearts.
Our cross means that we are putting to death every decision, every response, and every attitude in our life that is not consistent with the love of Jesus Christ.
